Presidential Newsletter June 2017

Dear colleagues,

The first year of my presidency has passed and it is time for reflection. The Board of Directors (BoD) have worked on a 5-year strategy and the paper will soon be launched on the EACTAIC website. The focus is to engage EACTAIC members in the strategy, to attract new members and increase the visibility of the EACTAIC society globally.

The 32nd EACTAIC Annual Congress in Berlin was a great success with more than 800 delegates. Invited speakers, presenters of the accepted abstracts and a variety of workshops excellently covered the theme of the four Cs: ‘Comprehensive Cardiovascular Cardiothoracic Care (C4)’. I want to thank the local organisers Matthias Heringlake and Joachim Erb and their staff for creating such a superb annual meeting in collaboration with the EACTAIC Congress Chair Donna Greenhalgh and the subcommittees.

A high priority for the BoD is to secure financial stability within EACTAIC. One of the steps taken is the change in the reimbursement policy for speakers, decided by the Representative Council (RC) in Basel June 2016 and valid until 2018 at the Annual Congress in Manchester. This initiative creates a challenge to the planning of the Annual Congresses and Echo Courses, therefore, I kindly encourage all EACTA members to offer lectures in the year to come and support your society. The reimbursement policy is to be evaluated at the RC Meeting in Manchester September 2018.

A special thanks goes to Joachim Erb who has served as the Secretary General in the EACTA BoD for several years. His dedication and hardworking service have secured a basis for regaining the financial stability of EACTA and I hereby express my gratitude to Joachim Erb on behalf of the EACTAIC membership.

A wish to give a warm welcome to Mohamed El Tahan, who was elected as a new BoD member at the Berlin RC Council. Following the RC election, the BoD decided to reorganise the positions within
the board. The Secretary General is now Jörg Ender, the Subcommittee Chair is Patrick Wouters and the Educational Chair is Mohamed El Tahan.

Next year in Manchester, there will be at least one vacant position in the BoD. I urge all EACTAIC members and the RCs to look for potential new board members and encourage them to apply for the vacant positions in 2018. I can promise you a membership of a great team of directors. I hope to see a number of aspiring colleagues running for the vacant positions. Please do not hesitate to contact me or other BoD members for further information.

Registration for the ECHO Course in Valencia, Spain, September 30th to October 3rd, 2017 is now open and I hope to see many of you in Valencia. In the meantime, I wish you all a nice and peaceful summer.
With Best Wishes

Bodil Steen Rasmussen

President of EACTAIC

COMUNICAZIONI DAI RAPPRESENTANTI ITALIANI DR. GIOVANNI LANDONI E DR. GIANLUCA PATERNOSTER:

    Dear Colleague,
the CPB SubCom invites all EACTAIC members to participate in the survey below related to “mortality reduction in the perioperative period of cardiac surgery” through the EACTAIC network.
The survey can be accessed through a dedicated website.

On http://www.democracybasedmedicine.com/cc2s2.php you’ll find all the drugs/techniques/strategies that might reduce peri-operative mortality in adult surgery according to randomized evidence published in peer-reviewed journals derived either from controlled trials (RCTs) or meta-analyses of RCTs. Do you routinely use these interventions in your clinical practice? Would you include these interventions into future international guidelines to reduce perioperative mortality?
lease could you just take one minute to cast your vote?
Note the little PDF icons next to each topic which link to the evidence.

    Best regards
    Gudrun Kunst, Chair CPB SubCom
